Verifying a Chinese university qualification: what CHSI's verification services are

Sources checked · Unofficial summary

A qualification from a mainland Chinese university can be checked through CHSI (China Higher Education Student Information), the website run by the Center for Student Services and Development of China's Ministry of Education (CSSD). CHSI's English pages describe three services: online authentication, an online verification report, and a verification report that can be issued in Chinese and English. This guide sets out what those pages print about each service and which details they leave out. For how this directory is organised, see this directory's section page.

This guide is an unofficial summary. The English wording below is this directory's rendering of CHSI's English pages, which are the source for every statement here.

What CSSD is

The About CSSD text describes CSSD as an institution directly under the Ministry of Education. It says CSSD was founded in 1991 and was formerly known as the China Higher Education Student Information and Career Center (CHESICC). Its main business is listed as higher education enrolment, student record and qualification management, and graduate employment. The same text describes CSSD as the only Ministry-authorised institution for verifying higher education qualification certificates. That is CSSD's own description on its page.

Online authentication

The Online Authentication entry says the service checks a student's record or qualification against the diploma or ID information the student provides. It lists four forms:

  • Personal Review: a student can access their own qualification or student record at no cost.
  • Individual Verification: a check by name and diploma number.
  • Member Verification: a check available to registered members.
  • Web Service: a qualification verification interface based on Web Service.

The Home page adds that students can check their own information for free through real-name registration.

Online verification report

The Online Verification Report entry says a student can apply for a report on their student record, qualification and degree, based on CSSD's database. The report has a one-year default valid period, which can be extended, and users can use the service freely during that period. The report comes in print, PDF and email versions, and it is available in English. The entry also says the barcode on the report can be pasted into a résumé.

The entry gives no fee and no processing time.

Verification report

The Verification Report entry says the report carries anti-counterfeiting features. It says people can verify qualification certificates awarded at any time, including certificates from before 1991, even where the certificate may not be in the database. The items it lists are:

  • higher education student records;
  • qualification and degree certificates;
  • academic transcripts;
  • high school qualifications;
  • Gaokao scores and Huikao results.

The reports can be issued in Chinese and in English.

Designation lines

CHSI's English pages list several designations:

  • a designated website for qualification enquiry, cited as Jiaoxue [2004] No. 25;
  • a designated platform for college entrance examination information and online consultation, organised since 2003;
  • a designated website for online registration for the national graduate school entrance examination, and a supplementary application platform;
  • CSSD as the only Ministry-designated qualification verification institution, cited as Jiaoxue [2007] No. 5.

These are the designations as CHSI's pages print them. This guide has not checked the cited Ministry documents.

Notices on the verification report page

The Verification Report page asks readers to review the following documents before starting an application. The titles are:

  • Declaration on Verification Business;
  • Review Rule Adjustment Announcement of Verification Report of China Higher Education Student's Academic Transcript During the Pandemic;
  • Announcement on the Change of Organization Name and Official Seal on the Verification Report;
  • Announcement on Adjustments about Verification Report of China Higher Education Student's Academic Transcript;
  • Announcement on Adjustments about Verification Report of China College Admission Examination Scores;
  • Announcement on Adjustments about Education Background Information Service for Overseas Study;
  • Announcement on Popularization of Electronic Reports for Higher Education Qualification Verification.

This guide does not reproduce the text of these seven notices. Readers should open them on CHSI's site.
