Which universities have the most disciplines on the Double First-Class list? A count, not a ranking
Sources checked · Unofficial summary
The annex to the second-round Double First-Class list does not rank universities. What it does print is a list of construction disciplines for each institution, and those lines can be counted. This page reports those counts for institutions with eight or more printed disciplines, says why a list built from them is not a ranking, and gives the Ministry's answer on rankings.
For the layout of this directory and how each page is built, see this directory's section page. Every institution named here comes from annex 1 to the notice (Ministry of Education, Ministry of Finance and National Development and Reform Commission, 9 February 2022). The English names of institutions and disciplines are this directory's renderings; the official lists are in Chinese. The Chinese texts are translated into English by this site. Confirm every name and number against the current official list before you rely on it.
What the annex prints
The annex is headed 第二轮“双一流”建设高校及建设学科名单(按学校代码排序), so its order is the order of school codes. Counting the entries of the annex, there are 147 institutions. Three of them are military institutions outside the national list of regular institutions, so 144 institutions have pages in this directory. Counting the entries of the annex, 145 institutions have disciplines printed, with 433 discipline entries in all and 97 different discipline names.
The annex does not print a ranking, a score or a province. The counts below are this site's counts, made from the entries of the annex.
Count of disciplines by institution
The table below lists each institution with eight or more disciplines printed, counting the entries of the annex. It follows the order of the count line, not the school-code order of the annex. The column headed "Disciplines printed" is a count, not a score.
| Institution (as printed) | English name (this directory) | Disciplines printed (count) |
|---|---|---|
Zhejiang University | 21 |
Fudan University | 20 |
Shanghai Jiao Tong University | 18 |
Nanjing University | 16 |
Renmin University of China | 14 |
Beijing Normal University | 12 |
Southeast University | 12 |
University of Science and Technology of China | 11 |
Wuhan University | 11 |
Sun Yat-sen University | 11 |
China Agricultural University | 9 |
Huazhong University of Science and Technology | 9 |
Beihang University | 8 |
Harbin Institute of Technology | 8 |
Tongji University | 8 |
Xi'an Jiaotong University | 8 |
A higher count does not mean a better university. The count shows only how many discipline lines the annex prints for that institution.
Institutions with no discipline printed
Two institutions have no disciplines printed in the annex: 北京大学 (Peking University) and 清华大学 (Tsinghua University). For each of them, the entry reads that the university determines and publishes its own construction disciplines. Paragraph 2 of the notice says that Peking University and Tsinghua University determined their construction disciplines themselves and published them themselves, so the annex does not print a count for either.
This site's reading is that a list ordered by these counts would leave out both universities, so it would not be a complete account of the annex. The two entries can be opened here: Peking University and Tsinghua University.
Institutions with one discipline printed
Counting the entries of the annex, 77 institutions have exactly one discipline printed. They are not listed on this page, because the table above covers eight or more only.
What question 9 says
In question 9 of the Ministry of Education's press Q&A of 14 February 2022, the Ministry's official said that the assessment of construction results does not simply use paper counts, ranking changes or honorary titles as evaluation indicators. The official also said that, in identifying the construction scope, the conditions are set without linking them to various university discipline rankings or paper indicators. This is what the Ministry's official said in the Q&A; the Q&A is not a regulation.
Questions people ask
Does the Double First-Class annex rank universities?
No. The annex does not print a ranking, and its order is the order of school codes. Question 9 of the Ministry's press Q&A (14 February 2022) says that identifying the construction scope is not linked to university discipline rankings or paper indicators.
Which universities have the most disciplines in the annex?
Counting the entries of the annex, the institutions with the highest printed counts are shown in the table on this page, with 浙江大学 (Zhejiang University) at 21 and 复旦大学 (Fudan University) at 20. These are counts, not scores, and a higher count does not mean a better university.
Why are Peking University and Tsinghua University not in the count?
The annex prints no discipline lines for them. Paragraph 2 of the notice (教研函〔2022〕1号, 9 February 2022) says that these two universities determined and published their own construction disciplines.
