The national list of higher education institutions, as of 17 June 2026, has 76 rows in attachment 1 whose 主管部门 (administering body) column reads 教育部 (the Ministry of Education). This count is made by this site by counting the rows of attachment 1; it is not a figure printed by the Ministry. The table below gives those 76 rows in the order they are printed in the list.

What the list covers
The Ministry's page gives the position as of 17 June 2026. It states 3,196 higher education institutions in total. Of these, 2,952 are regular institutions (普通高等学校), including 1,412 undergraduate institutions and 1,540 higher vocational (junior-college) institutions. The page also gives 244 adult higher education institutions, which are listed in attachment 2. This article does not use attachment 2.
The page states that institutions in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan are not included.
Article 14 of the Higher Education Law
Article 14 of the Higher Education Law of the People's Republic of China (adopted 29 August 1998, amended 27 December 2015 and 29 December 2018) says, in this site's English translation, that the education administrative department of the State Council is in charge of higher education across the country. It also says that department manages the higher education institutions that the State Council determines to train talent mainly for the whole country. The article adds that other relevant departments of the State Council handle relevant higher education work within the scope the State Council sets. Article 14 names no institution.
Article 14 describes administration. Being administered by the Ministry of Education is an administrative fact about a row in the list. It is not a quality mark, and this article does not present it as one.

How the rows are set out
Attachment 1 (全国普通高等学校名单, an Excel file on the same page as the list) has seven columns: 序号 (serial number), 学校名称 (school name), 学校标识码 (school identification code), 主管部门 (administering body), 所在地 (place), 办学层次 (level of study) and 备注 (remarks).
Each province has a header line, and each school is printed under one header. The header is not always the province that appears in the 所在地 column. For example, 大连理工大学 and 东北大学 are printed under the 辽宁省 header, while their 所在地 entries read 大连市 and 沈阳市.
Attachment 1 has no column for a ranking, a 985 or 211 label, or a Double First-Class label. It has no column for teaching language or for international students. In each of the 76 rows counted here, 办学层次 reads 本科 (undergraduate), and the 备注 column is blank.
Chinese names are printed exactly as they appear in attachment 1. The English names in the table are this directory's renderings, not official names, and they appear only where this directory has a page for the school. The official lists are in Chinese. Where no English name is given, the table shows the Chinese name only.

Counting the rows of attachment 1, 76 rows have 教育部 in the 主管部门 column. The 序号 numbers are not consecutive, and the numbers missing from the table belong to rows this table does not include.

Checking a name against the list
The list is dated 17 June 2026. Confirm each name against the current official list on the Ministry's website, because the official Chinese list prevails. The guide on checking a Chinese university against the Ministry's list covers the same steps.
Appearing in attachment 1 does not show whether a university enrols international students. For entry requirements, fees and deadlines, use the university's own admission prospectus.
Questions people ask
Does being administered by the Ministry of Education show that a university is of higher quality?
No provision in the texts used here says so. Article 14 of the Higher Education Law describes the State Council's education administrative department as responsible for higher education work and for managing the institutions the State Council determines. The 主管部门 column of attachment 1 records the administering body for each row, and attachment 1 has no ranking column or quality-label column.
Which list and which date does this table use?
The table uses the National list of higher education institutions (全国高等学校名单) as of 17 June 2026, published by the Ministry of Education, and its attachment 1 (全国普通高等学校名单). Confirm each name against the current official list.
Does the national list show which universities accept international students?
Attachment 1 has seven columns: 序号, 学校名称, 学校标识码, 主管部门, 所在地, 办学层次 and 备注. None of them is a column for teaching language or for international students. For those details, use the university's own admission prospectus.
