How to find which universities are listed for a discipline on the Double First-Class list

To find the universities listed for a discipline, start from the discipline's Chinese first-level name and search the annex to the second-round Double First-Class list. The annex prints each university followed by its disciplines, in school-code order. Two universities print no disciplines in the annex, and each university's own admission prospectus is the place to check whether a programme takes international students.

What the list is
The second-round Double First-Class list is annex 1 to the notice 教研函〔2022〕1号 (Double First-Class list, 9 February 2022). The Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance and the National Development and Reform Commission issued the notice on 9 February 2022. The notice says the three ministries studied the list and reported it to the State Council for approval.
The notice also says that Peking University and Tsinghua University determined their own construction disciplines and published them separately. Confirm the list against the current official list before you rely on it.
Steps to follow
- Find the discipline's Chinese first-level name in the 2022 catalogue.
- Copy the name exactly as it is printed.
- Open annex 1 of the second-round Double First-Class list.
- Read the entries from the first entry onward.
- Note each entry whose disciplines include the name.
- Note the university name at the start of each such entry.
- Note Peking University and Tsinghua University separately.
- Open that university's own admission prospectus.
- Check whether the programme takes international students.
Step 9 is a check against the university's prospectus. Being on the list does not show that a university enrols international students in a given programme.
Worked example: reading one line
Each entry in the annex has the same form. The university name comes first, then a colon, then its disciplines. The discipline name you are looking for appears after the colon.
The interdisciplinary category (交叉学科, category 14 in the 2022 catalogue) has one discipline name in the annex: 集成电路科学与工程 (Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering). The annex prints this discipline for one institution, 复旦大学 (Fudan University; Double First-Class list, 9 February 2022).
Note 4 of the catalogue's explanatory notes makes an exception for this category. Except for the interdisciplinary category, each first-level discipline is awarded degrees under the discipline category it belongs to. For the interdisciplinary category, note 6 says the degree-awarding discipline category is decided by the degree-granting institution's degree evaluation committee.

Category 11 (军事学, Military science) has no row in the table. These counts describe the annex's entries. They are not a quality score for any discipline or university.
Two universities with no disciplines printed
The annex prints no disciplines for two universities. For each, the entry gives the text 自主确定建设学科并自行公布, which means the university determines and publishes its own disciplines.

Paragraph 2 of the notice says the two universities determined their own construction disciplines and published them. The annex does not reproduce those disciplines. For the disciplines of these two universities, check their own published information.
What the counts cover
Counting the entries of the annex, the annex names 147 institutions. Counting the entries of the annex, there are 433 discipline entries across the other 145 institutions, and 97 different discipline names. This directory has pages for 144 civilian universities from the annex.
The annex's order is school-code order. It is the order in which the list is printed and it is not a ranking. Read the annex's order only as the order of the printed lines.

Questions people ask
Does being on the list show that a university enrols international students?
No. Being on the Double First-Class list does not show that a university enrols international students in a given programme. The annex lists universities and disciplines only. Check each university's own admission prospectus for whether a programme takes international students.
Why do Peking University and Tsinghua University have no disciplines in the annex?
The annex prints the entry 自主确定建设学科并自行公布 for each of them. Paragraph 2 of the notice of 9 February 2022 says the two universities determined their own construction disciplines and published them.
What does the interdisciplinary category mean in the 2022 catalogue?
Note 4 of the catalogue's explanatory notes says that, except for the interdisciplinary category, each first-level discipline is awarded degrees under its own category. The interdisciplinary category is treated differently under note 6.
