Where China's Double First-Class universities are: counts by province and city
Sources checked · Unofficial summary
Of the 147 universities on the second-round Double First-Class list, 144 appear in the Ministry of Education's national list of regular higher education institutions, which records a location for each. Beijing has 34 of them, Jiangsu 16 and Shanghai 14. Every one of mainland China's 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions has at least one.
How the counts were made
The Double First-Class list names universities but gives no locations. The counts below join it to the national list of higher education institutions dated 17 June 2026, which files each institution under a province and records one location. Three military institutions on the Double First-Class list are not in the national list of regular institutions and are left out of the counts.

Tianjin appears with 5 in the province table and 6 in the city table. The national list files Hebei University of Technology under Hebei Province and records Tianjin as its location, so it counts for Hebei as a province and for Tianjin as a city.
Reading the counts
The counts say where listed universities are recorded, and nothing more. A count is not a measure of quality, and the list does not compare provinces. The recorded location is one place per university. Several universities run campuses in other cities, which the national list does not show.
Use the finder to filter by province and city, or by subject area if you are looking for a discipline.
